Brunswick Rec's September 26th Pickleball Tournament
The Brunswick Rec Center isn’t some swanky country club, and that’s the point. It’s where real players cut their teeth, where beginners turn into regulars, and where the lights stay on a little later than they should because no one wants to leave mid-round. It’s been the backbone of Midcoast pickleball - approachable, inclusive, and relentlessly supportive of the sport’s growth in Maine, and the perfect venue for SALT's first official tournament sponsorship.
September 26th wasn’t about flashy highlight reels or flaunting self-rated DUPR scores. It was about real people with day jobs showing up on a Friday night to hit a pickleball like rent was due. Midcoast Maine showed up with its signature mix of grit, caffeine, and no-bs competitiveness that could start a small war. The result? Chaos, laughter, and a few “Nice shot” comments that definitely weren’t sincere.

What We Watched
With their combination of consistency and smart decision making, Josh Leighton and Peter Cogley took first place. With each game, they brought calculated tempo shifts, surgical shot placement, and just enough unpredictability to make everyone else question their life choices. Their style wasn't dramatic, but it was relentless. The kind of pickleball that forces opponents to check their grip, their stance, and maybe their existential purpose between points. And, full disclosure: team SALT was one of those opponents. Yes, the same company sponsoring the event, writing this recap, and handing out the prizes also stepped on the court to try to win them. Spoiler alert: we didn't. Josh and Peter dismantled us with the kind of polite precision that's somehow worse than trash talk. We like to think of it as "an educational experience." They call it "winning." Either way, it hurt...emotionally, physically, spiritually - and possibly financially.

In second place, Wendi Pulsifer and Bernie Forcier played the kind of smart, high-IQ pickleball that makes you question whether you’ve ever actually understood the game. Their consistency was unnerving in the best way; perfect drops, sharp angles, and the patience of people who have clearly done this before. Every point felt intentional, almost premeditated.
The championship match between Josh & Peter and Wendi & Bernie wasn’t just good, it was one of the best matches this region’s seen this summer. Momentum swung like a pendulum, rallies lasted longer than some attention spans, yet the crowd was fully locked in. If you came to Brunswick Rec that night, you didn’t just watch a final, you watched a masterclass.
Looking Forward
First tournaments are like first pancakes - slightly chaotic, a little misshapen, but absolutely worth it. We learned where the brackets got tight, where the skill gaps widened, and how the collective competitive spirit of Midcoast Maine could power a small city.
This event proved one thing above all: when you light up a gym, throw down some brackets, and add a pinch of salt, people show up. And they don't just show up to play, they show up to prove something.

Which is why we're already building what comes next, but we're thinking… bigger. Louder. More theatrical. Likely, more obnoxious.
Imagine this: a championship belt. Not a plaque, not a trophy - a WCW-style championship belt. A full-contact, engraved-nameplate, over-the-shoulder piece of glory that screams, "Yes, I'm the problem - it's me." The winner takes it home, defends it at the next event, and gets their name etched into Maine pickleball history (did I mention more theatrical?).
If that sounds absurd, good. Pickleball's supposed to be fun. And if SALT's going to sponsor a tournament, we're going to make it something you'll want to brag about - ideally while wearing that belt in the grocery store.
What's Coming This Fall & Winter
The pickleball calendar's getting crowded, and we wouldn't have it any other way. Here's what's on deck:
October 24, 2025 | Brunswick Rec Center
Apparently, experience has its perks; and its own bracket. If you’ve crossed that magical 55 mark into pickleball wisdom, the Brunswick Rec Center (our favorite local hub for good rallies and good people) is hosting your chance to show that age brings sharper strategy, steadier hands, and just a little extra stretch before warm-up.
November 14–16, 2025 | The Wicked Pickle, South Portland
Three days of competition benefiting Maine NEEDS. The Wicked Pickle's got the setup, the cause has heart, and honestly, if you're not doing something purposeful the weekend before Thanksgiving, you're probably just watching other people baste poultry. Come play. It feels better than pie, plus it's for a great cause.
January 1, 2026 | Maine Pines Racket & Fitness, Brunswick
Start the new year supporting NAMI Maine and Shalom House. If you're the type who usually begins January 1st with regret and aspirin, maybe try beginning it with a serve and a purpose. Maine Pines has the venue, NAMI has the street cred, and you've got 364 more days to make bad decisions after this one. More details to come about all of the above events.
Why It Matters
This wasn't about podiums or bragging rights (maybe a little). It was proof that the same precision, control, and grit we engineer into every SALT paddle are alive and well in the people swinging them.
Every rally, every drop, every opponent that muttered the obligatory "nice shot" to maintain the facade of good court etiquette - all of it reminded us why we're building what we're building: because the game deserves gear made with the same obsessive attention and unfiltered joy that players bring to the court.
And, yes, we'll be back on the court next time seeking redemption for team SALT. If it's pickleball in the Midcoast region - we're there to support, document, and rack up unforced errors. September was just the warmup.
More to come. Stay tuned. Stay salty. 🧂
